Holy Family Chess Team Strikes Gold, Again
HOLY FAMILY CHESS TEAM STRIKES GOLD, AGAINCanton, Kan.–The second outing for the Holy Family Elementary Chess Team yielded similar results to their first. On the heels of a team victory in Lindsborg for the K-8 team, sixth-graders Braydon Binder, Noah Bruggeman, Jensen Brull, and Tate Dinkel took the first place title at the Canton/Galva Invitational on November 5.Adding to that success, Holy Family third-grader Jenna Brull was joined by Eli Stein, also in the third grade at HFE, to form a team competing in the K-3 division. Brull and Stein walked away second place finishers as a team with Stein taking 5th individually and Brull 2nd. Brull and Stein had a tough day as all the students except the high school (K-12) division competed as a single group with awards being separated out later by division. This resulted in some interesting matchups between the young HFE competitors and students from other schools as old as eighth grade. Although there was the temptation to be discouraged being paired with older, more experienced players, Brull and Stein maintained a positive attitude and gave HFE its first K-3 team chess trophy. In the K-8 division, the HFE sixth graders maintained runner-up standing through most of the day, only capturing the top spot in the last two rounds and successfully defending a one-point advantage over second-place Concordia Junior High. Individually Bruggeman took 2nd, Brull took 8th, Dinkel took 9th, and Binder brought home the 14th place medal in the K-8 division. Dinkel was undefeated after the first four rounds of play, putting him at the top of the tournament standings going into round five.Photo caption: (L-R) Eli Stein, Tate Dinkel, Jenna Brull, Jensen Brull, Noah Bruggeman, and Braydon Binder brought home the top prize in the K-8 division and 2nd in K-3 at the Canton/Galva Invitational Chess Tournament November 5.
