Title: Miss Kansas
By Jesus Martinez
Miss
Kansas
came to visit our school on Tuesday, May 11th. She
said that she was shy in grade school and not athletic at
all, even though she was tall and her father was a coach.
In 5th grade, she decided to join the band. She tried
many instruments, but decided on the trumpet because it was
loud, powerful, and bold – just the opposite of her.
That gave her confidence. Then she slowly was not the
same anymore. She realized she was worth something.
It made her feel good about herself. She said it was
important to challenge yourself to set goals. The
challenge is to set goals for things you love to do, and
that will make you unique and special. This will make
you happy. She was very proud that she took first in State
in high school even though there were so many others
competing. She played 2 pieces on her trumpet for us that
were very beautiful. This is what she did for her
talent in the Miss Kansas contest. Now she is going to
compete in the Miss America contest. She has enjoyed
this year representing the contest and bringing awareness to
the arts, especially the value of music. She has gone to 75
schools with this message.

Title: The Bully Prevention Committee By Hannah Michaud
Nobody
likes bullying, but it’s a big problem in many schools.
That’s why we have picked a representative from each
classroom from grades 3-6 to keep H.F.E. be bully free.
These kids have met on the second Tuesday
of each month. I got to talk with them and ask them
what they think bullying is . This is what they said:
It’s when you hurt someone physically or emotionally, when
someone’s mean, when you hurt someone by actions or words,
and when you cause someone to think less of themselves.
This committee gathered for the last time this past Tuesday
for their final meeting. We were treated by Mrs. Simon
for all our hard work at the Ice Cream Scoop.
We have worked hard through this
past year. These are the kids who have participated.
Connor Staab, 3A, Nicholas Zimmerman, 3B, Karl Rack, 4A,
Luke Ruder, 4B, Halle Lang, 4C,Hayden Lowe, 5A, Deonna
Welbrock, 5B, Taylor Gabel, 6A, and Hannah Michaud, 6B.
Thank you for all you do to make H.F.E. a safe and happy
place!
Title: Cuddly Critters By
Taylor Gabel and Taylor Dinkel
On Friday March 12th, the cafeteria
was “stuffed” with animals. We had fuzzy creatures starting
at $0.50 to $3.00. This project was a major success! We
broke a record by making $372. This money will be put to
good use by helping the poor and Ms. Huser. We also had
another first time thing. We had a raffle with one large
bear and one small one. Emma Pope in 3B won!
Congratulations, Emma! Thanks to all the fabulous people who
donated stuffed animals to make this day crawling with fun
and critters.
