Spelling
Bee
By Maddie Lagree
On Tuesday, January 29, 2013, the whole school came
together to watch the spelling bee. There were 14
students, 2 from each classroom ranging from 4th grade
to 6th grade. Mrs. Schrant has been in charge of the
spelling bee for about 15-20 years, she's not for sure.
There were 9 rounds including a final round. All of the
words were divided into categories such as compounds,
diaphones, and affixes. Mrs. Schrant got all the words
from Houghton-Mifflin Co. Noah Flynn took first place,
second place was Mariana Ramirez, and third place went
to Landon Dinkel.
Mrs. Schrant has been in a spelling bee before, but she
got out on the word referee. She put three e's at the
end instead of two.
HFE's
Chili Supper
By Tiffany Pfeifer
On Sunday, January 27, HFE's 2013 Catholic Schools Week
started off with the annual Chili Supper. The most
popular part of this event is the famous dinner. At this
dinner students and their families were served turkey
sandwiches, chili, veggies, and the best homemade
desserts.
There is also a raffle that kids and adults were able to
enter to have a chance to win six different prizes. In
the kids raffle, they had a chance of winning an
electric scooter, Nitendo 3D D.S., $150 American Girl
Doll gift certificate, doll house, the shark hat with a
signed picture of Mrs. Wentling wearing it, and a free
happy meal a week for a year. In the adult raffle, they
could win $250 cash, $100 at Warren's Meat Market, $250
HFE Bucks, $250 for Next-tech, and a homemade afghan and
quilt. All of the prizes in each raffle were donated by
families. The raffle raised close to $8,000 setting a
new record and crashing the old one of $5,500.
There was a silent auction as well. Every class put
together a themed basket to be auctioned off. The
highest sold basket was from KB, which sold for $550.00.
In the basket the class had a quilt that a handprint
from each student. Almost all of the items in the basket
were made by the class themselves.
Most of the kids spend their time in the game room. In
this room there are 17 games set up. There were specific
games set up for young children and ones for older. At
the games kids could win lucky bucks. With the lucky
bucks they were able to get a prize. The cake walk was
the only one were you could win all kinds of deserts.
All of the 6th graders helped out at the games. They all
had a great time being a part of the Chili Supper and
thought it was a great way to start Catholic Schools
Week.!
Kansas
By: Tony Malleck
There are lots of awesome things
about Kansas. On January 22, 2013 some students
had their memories refreshed and/or learned about Kansas
in a very fun way, thanks to Thad Beach. Mr. Beach
played a lot of unique instruments and had a lot of cool
things to show Holy Family Elementary. Mr. Beach
has been to over 40 states and has collected instruments
for about 40 years. He had other jobs before he
started his show, but not since the late nineties when
he started going to schools all over the U.S. and
telling them about their states.
